A message from Garry!

2010 Spring Course 4

I really felt, having listened to the concert again on the CD, that I must write to say how proud I was of all your work. The Scheherazade is really sensational, with brilliant solo and ensemble playing. There is some real subtlety in the way the orchestra phrases, and it seems that we now breathe together much better, and it doesn't ever sound frenetic or rushed.

I think that the orchestra has really matured in the time I've worked with it, despite the fact that every year there is a considerable change over in membership. I think it has developed a real sense of identity, and a way of playing, that really marks it out as something very special. A friend of mine, who is a musician, overheard the last movement of the Rimsky-Korsakov and genuinely thought it was a professional orchestra on the radio. I think that's pretty high praise.

Some thoughts from our 2010 soloist, Daniel Bell

2010 Spring Course 13

The EYO 2010 Spring Concerts were a really great experience for me. It's the third time I've played a concerto with EYO (the previous times were in 1997 and 2002), and I enjoyed this time the most. It was fantastic to get the chance to perform the Beethoven Concerto three times in a row, so I felt I could really get to grips with it. It was a pleasure to play in the beautiful acoustic of the Usher Hall and to work with Garry Walker, who was a member of the orchestra with me in the early 1990s. He and the orchestra did a fantastic job with the Beethoven and the whole programme.

To all young musicians in the Edinburgh area!

The Tinderbox Orchestra

The Tinderbox Orchestra will be an exciting and unusual youth orchestra based in Edinburgh. It will be a community of young musicians, professional musicians and professional bands, in which everyone works together to create and perform quality music from various genres and styles that young people enjoy listening to. We will collaborate and perform alongside top bands and musicians at the types of venues and festivals that young musicians aspire to play at. We will use the orchestra in an unusual and creative way to write and perform different styles of music not previously explored with an orchestra. We will use a variety of instruments, both traditional orchestral instruments and more modern instruments such as drums, guitars, bass guitars, electronic instruments and whatever else might be required. The young musicians in the orchestra will be involved in all aspects of the music, from the composition to the performance. We already have a large and varied network of professional musicians and bands from all genres and backgrounds working together on this exciting new project. These musicians will provide a broad, varied and high quality musical education, including workshops and teaching in different styles of music, composition, improvisation, technique, how to play in bands and ensembles, and many other important aspects of music. The idea is to involve aspiring young musicians in a genuinely high-quality, creative and exciting musical project, and through this to create a really inspiring educational environment for young musicians.

Many congratulations to our President, James Loughran, who has been awarded a CBE in the New Year's Honours List. James was the founding Conductor of the EYO in 1964,
has conducted the orchestra on many occasions since then and remains one of our greatest supporters today.

Congratulations!

Daniel Bell
Many congratulations to Daniel Bell, former violinist with the EYO and our soloist in 2002, who is the newest member of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra!!
We are delighted that Daniel has agreed to be our 2010 Spring concerts soloist, performing Beethoven's violin concerto.
