EDINBURGH YOUTH ORCHESTRA (EYO) 2010 – WELCOME HOME!
For the EYO, 2010 will be a homecoming year. The orchestra is very excited to be welcoming back two former players as soloist and conductor for its Spring 2010 concert season in April.
Violinist Daniel Bell, now a member of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, will take the stage to perform Beethoven's much-loved Violin Concerto. Our conductor will be Garry Walker, a former cellist with the EYO, who is now Permanent Guest Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
We are also very excited to be returning in 2010 to perform in the Usher Hall, Edinburgh. The recent closure of the hall has allowed us to explore new venues, but we are looking forward to giving the players the opportunity, once again, to play in one of the world's major classical concert venues. The luxury of the acoustic and sense of atmosphere of the Usher Hall will give our young players a unique experience, which we hope will inspire some of them to go on to international musical careers like Daniel and Garry.
The orchestra will also be performing in the Concert Hall of the RSAMD in Glasgow and in Perth Concert Hall, where we have built supportive audiences over the past couple of years.
The programme will open with Shostakovich's exciting Festive Overture and will conclude with Rimsky-Korsakov's 'Scheherazade'.
Recent reviews of our concerts have been glowing. A review following our concert in Perth Concert Hall in April 2009 reported that 'by even the most exalted standards the concert given on Monday by the EYO was first class in all departments'. Susan Nickalls wrote in The Scotsman 'The last of the Edinburgh Youth Orchestra's spring concerts drew a capacity audience to hear a varied and ambitious programme which highlighted the considerable abilities of these young musicians.'
We endeavour to give our young players every opportunity to perform to the highest level, and in 2010 they will be tutored, as usual, by professional coaches from the principal Scottish Orchestras.
